The study interviewed 14 elementary teachers in Medina about the characteristics of twice-exceptional students. Teachers recognize both giftedness traits and academic difficulties, but tend to treat them as two separate conditions rather than one integrated profile.

How do elementary teachers see a gifted student with a disability?

A twice-exceptional (2e) student is gifted and has a disability at the same time, and schools often recognize the disability while overlooking the giftedness. Because teachers in the early grades are often the first to nominate students for programs, the study held in-depth interviews with 14 elementary teachers in Medina to learn how they perceive these students.

Why the elementary years?

Giftedness is hard to test for in the early grades, so teacher nomination becomes the main route to identification. In these years a 2e student's high ability can mask special education needs, so accommodations are not put in place and difficulties build up by middle and high school. In Saudi Arabia these students are placed in general education classrooms with general education teachers, whose pre-service preparation includes no formal training on this population.

How the study worked

This was a qualitative phenomenological study. Of 27 teachers who responded, 14 met the criteria: certified elementary teachers in Medina who were aware of 2e students in their classrooms and had at least three years of experience teaching them. They were 28 to 45 years old, with 5 to 14 years of teaching experience. Semi-structured interviews in Arabic, built on eight expert-reviewed questions, lasted 45–60 minutes each and took place at the teachers' schools; a female interviewer met with the female teachers. The data were analyzed thematically, with two researchers coding separately and then comparing results.

What the study found

  1. 1

Strong speakers and problem solvers

Twelve of the 14 teachers saw communication as a clear strength, especially speaking and oral presentation in class. Most linked these students' cognitive abilities to problem solving, a view shared by male and female teachers alike.

(معلم)“Problem-solving is one of the strengths of twice-exceptional students, because they can identify the causes of [an] issue and understand it fully.” (MT2)

Strong retention, curiosity and abstract thinking

Teachers described these students' strong retention, their curiosity and eagerness to learn anything new, and how quickly they grasp abstract concepts. One teacher recounted how a simple change in where an underachieving student sat revealed an ability that had not been visible.

14Abstract thinking: 12 of 14

(معلمة)“I had a student in Grade 3 who was underachieving in school ... I put this student in the front row and found that this caused her to become a more active participant in the class. I came to realize [after this move] that [this 2e student] has excellent abstract-thinking skills.” (FT7)

Creativity and leadership

Eleven teachers named creativity as an observed trait, and the same number cited leadership: these students take on responsibilities beyond their age and tend to be popular and persuasive among peers.

(معلمة)“Twice-exceptional students are leaders, whether in class projects or sports, and are popular and persuasive.” (FT2)

Difficulties in reading, writing and math

All teachers named weak writing as a common challenge; some students struggle with the motor skills of handwriting, which can get in the way of written assignments. Nearly all pointed to weak reading, especially when reading aloud, and 11 mentioned poor performance in mathematics.

(معلمة)“One of my best-performing twice-exceptional students in creativity struggles significantly with writing skills.” (FT2)

Concentration and self-esteem

Ten teachers said some of these students excel in many subjects yet struggle to concentrate and are easily distracted. Nine pointed to low self-esteem, which one teacher said makes school harder for them.

(معلم)“I think the twice-exceptional student in my class is easily distracted and has difficulty completing assignments.” (MT6)

Aware they exist, but not of the whole picture

Teachers knew a student could be gifted and have a disability at once, but the depth of their knowledge about this group was limited. Several noticed students who were highly curious yet wrote poorly, without drawing conclusions from that contrast. Few had referred these students to special education services. Overall, teachers tended to see giftedness and disability as two independent conditions rather than one condition whose traits shape learning together.

What it means in practice

The Ministry of Education should invest in programs that serve these students and in professional development that teaches teachers about their special needs.
Teachers should learn, preferably during their university studies, the true characteristics of 2e students and the special education services they need.
Serving the gifted side is not enough; referring the student for disability support guards against chronic underachievement and even failure.
Future research should include special and gifted education teachers, parents and 2e students themselves, and ask whether teachers see this group as a distinct population.

Teachers see the giftedness and they see the disability; serving a twice-exceptional student requires seeing both together in one learner.
