The study interviewed 12 general, gifted and special education teachers in Hail about their preparation for teaching twice-exceptional students. Teachers showed conceptual awareness but limited practical preparedness, and identified practice-oriented training as their main need.

What do teachers need to identify and support twice-exceptional students?

Inclusive classrooms include students who combine high ability with disability-related needs, and many of them go underserved, partly because teachers have had limited preparation. This study conducted in-depth interviews with twelve teachers in public schools in Hail to understand how they see their professional development needs in this area.

One student, two exceptionalities

A twice-exceptional (2e) student shows high cognitive potential while also having a disability such as dyslexia, a learning disability, ADHD, or autism spectrum disorder. Identification is complicated by the masking effect: giftedness can hide the disability, or the disability can hide the giftedness, so the student's abilities are misread and the education provided does not fit. The study notes that most research on twice-exceptionality comes from Western contexts, that teacher preparation in Saudi Arabia does not address the complexities of dual exceptionality, and that existing training often treats giftedness and disability as separate domains.

How the study worked

The study used a qualitative phenomenological design. Twelve teachers (7 men and 5 women, aged 25 to 55) from four public schools in Hail took part: five in general education, three in gifted education, and four in special education, all with direct experience teaching 2e students. Each semi-structured interview lasted 45 to 60 minutes. The data were analyzed thematically following Braun and Clarke; the two researchers coded the transcripts independently and then met until they agreed on the final thematic structure, and participants reviewed their own transcripts.

The lens of reflective practice

The study draws on Donald Schön's theory of reflective practice: reflection-in-action and reflection-on-action. Without a solid understanding of 2e traits, a teacher struggles to interpret the complex behavior seen in class or to review an intervention afterward, for example to tell a behavioral outburst apart from frustration caused by the gap between a student's potential and performance. For this reason, the study argues that professional development should bridge theoretical knowledge and practical application.

What the study found

  1. 1

Understanding the unique needs of 2e students

Teachers saw these students' needs as the main driver of their need for specialized professional development, and through them named what training should center on: support that addresses strengths and difficulties together, attention to social and emotional challenges such as frustration, isolation, anxiety, and low self-esteem, and individualized instruction that combines strategies from special and gifted education. They also saw a role for teachers as advocates within the school system, because, as one put it, these students "can fall through the cracks if their dual exceptionalities are not recognized."

Barriers to effective teacher training

Teachers described an education system that offers no training on twice-exceptionality and a gap between training policies and these students' actual needs. They added limited resources and budgets, a scarcity of expert trainers, and training that, when available, may lack quality or relevance. Misconceptions were a further barrier, including the belief that general education training is sufficient, or that what is already provided to gifted students or students with disabilities covers 2e students' needs.

Impact of inadequate training on teaching and learning

Teachers linked the lack of training to feeling unprepared, to low confidence in identifying these students, and to stress for both teacher and student. For students, the consequences they described were misidentification, support that does not fit, and challenges that grow worse, including increased frustration.

12)Teacher preparedness (8 of 12)
12)Students' outcomes (9 of 12)

Inadequate training often results in a lack of confidence to identify 2e students effectively.

Awareness that does not always become practice

The discussion shows that teachers hold a clear conceptual understanding of twice-exceptionality and describe situations in which giftedness masked a difficulty or the reverse. Yet this recognition did not necessarily translate into accurate identification or effective instructional responses. With limited preparation, teachers rely on personal judgment and informal strategies, which increases their uncertainty, particularly in identification decisions, and their reflection on practice remains largely individual.

What it means in practice

Training on twice-exceptionality as a distinct area of practice, not as part of gifted or special education alone.
Training that focuses on identification challenges, integrated instructional planning, and social-emotional support in inclusive classrooms.
Professional development built on real classroom examples, with opportunities for teachers to reflect on their own teaching.
A supportive environment from the education system, with the needed resources and access to specialized expertise, since training without this support limits student outcomes.

Fulfilling the promise of inclusive education requires moving beyond teachers' general awareness toward practice-based training.
