This classroom-based quantitative exploratory study recruited 123 undergraduate students from several university disciplines who participated in a structured student-AI protocol that lasted for two weeks and was part of a classroom-based innovation business project. A post-task survey was provided to participants to explore students’ perceptions of how structured collaboration with GenAI tools influences innovation, strategic thinking, skill development, and challenges in an entrepreneurship education context. The results indicated that participants during the experiment implemented different prompt-engineering strategies and revealed adaptive problem-solving skills with GenAI, including rephrasing their prompts, asking for clarifications, and challenging the students’ project assumptions. Students revealed that the GenAI-student collaboration encouraged them to develop advanced SWOT analyses, develop cognitive skills, and generate innovative business ideas. The results suggested that structured collaboration with GenAI in innovative business ideation projects can play a supportive role as a cognitive and strategic collaborative partner. Recommendations for future research and GenAI practices at the university level were also provided in this study.

How the study worked
وبعد انتهاء التجربة أجابوا عن استبانة تناولت الاستراتيجيات التي استخدموها، والتحديات التي واجهوها، وأثر التجربة في أفكارهم وتعلّمهم، وبلغ معامل ثباتها (ألفا كرونباخ) 0.94.The study took place in an entrepreneurship course at the University of Hail that is open to students from all majors, including business, engineering, design, health sciences, and information technology. Students worked in small teams on a two-week innovation project, and each team chose its own GenAI tool, such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek, or Grok. Before starting, students received a written protocol with instructions for each stage and sample prompts. After the activity, they completed a survey on the strategies they used, the challenges they faced, and how the experience affected their ideas and learning; the survey's reliability (Cronbach's alpha) was 0.94.
The protocol: five stages that keep the student in charge
1
Before any AI use, the team defines its project idea, target customers and the problem it addresses, and drafts a preliminary SWOT analysis to compare against later.
2
The team introduces the project to the AI in detail, asks it to pose questions to understand it, then shares the initial analysis and asks what was overlooked.
3
The team asks the AI to challenge the project's core assumptions, propose alternatives, and analyze competitors and possible business models.
4
The team rebuilds its SWOT analysis through repeated rounds of feedback and explores how weaknesses might become opportunities.
5
The team summarizes new ideas, sets next steps, documents the full conversation, and reflects on how it adjusted its prompting.
Among the protocol's tips: do not always accept the first answer, and ask the AI for counterarguments to its own suggestions.

Students in balanced interactions reported the most varied idea generation.
What the study found
1
Open-ended questions were the most used and most valued strategy
62.6% of students used open-ended questions, 55.3% asked the AI to improve their SWOT analysis, and 44.7% asked it to evaluate their ideas. Asking the AI to challenge assumptions was used by only 38.2%. When asked which strategies were most effective, 69.9% chose open-ended questions and 52.9% chose SWOT improvement, suggesting that exploratory and evaluative dialogue served them better than answer-seeking prompts.
2
Prompting was both a challenge and a skill learned
10.1%.32.5% struggled to formulate effective questions, 30.1% received superficial or generic responses, 14.6% had difficulty directing the conversation, and the same share encountered inaccurate information, while 38.2% reported no challenges. Students responded with specific tactics, and only 10.1% were unable to overcome the difficulty.
(50.4%)Rephrasing the question more clearly (50.4%)
(46.2%)Asking the tool for further clarification (46.2%)
(30.3%)Breaking complex questions into simpler ones (30.3%)
(23.5%)Asking the course instructor for help (23.5%)
No student reported that their idea stayed the same. 36.6% reported a major change to its core aspects, 30.9% a moderate change, 24.4% a radical restructuring, and 8.1% minor edits. 39% developed one or two new ideas, 38.2% developed three to five, and 8.9% developed more than ten.
4
Balanced collaboration produced more ideas
Comparing interaction styles, students who shared the lead with the AI in a balanced way reported the most diverse idea-generation results, many producing between three and ten ideas, whereas AI-led interactions were linked with fewer ideas.
5
SWOT analysis improved more on the inside than the outside
79% said the tool improved how they identified strengths and 57.1% how they recognized weaknesses, but the shares were lower for external dimensions: 40.3% for opportunities, 31.1% for threats, and 26.1% for integrating the SWOT components. The study suggests students may find it easier to use the AI to refine their own concepts than to examine market conditions and external risk, an area that calls for stronger instructional support.
6
Greater confidence and openness
(67).On the self-assessment statements, no student selected "disagree" or "strongly disagree" for any item. The most strong agreements were for feeling able to use GenAI in future academic or professional work (87 students), followed by gaining confidence in developing innovative ideas (72), learning new skills for interacting with GenAI (69), and becoming more open to changing initial ideas (67).

The effect was stronger on the project's internal side than on reading the market and external risk.
What it means in practice
GenAI is most useful in teaching when it is embedded in structured collaboration that pushes students to question its outputs and write their own prompts, not when it is used to obtain ready-made answers.
Students need explicit support in AI literacy, prompt formulation, and evaluating outputs rather than accepting them uncritically.
Faculty need pedagogical and ethical awareness to guide students toward responsible, critical use of these tools.
Universities should move beyond either banning these tools or allowing unstructured use, and develop practical guidelines on appropriate and inappropriate uses, updated regularly as the tools evolve.
External market and risk analysis is where students need stronger instructional guidance when working with these tools.
The study concludes that the central question is not whether students should use generative AI, but under what conditions and with what guidance its use becomes educationally valuable.
